Superb Edwardian silver Cigarette/ Match Striker Box by Goldsmiths and Silversmiths London 1908
A truly superb and unusual silver cigarette/ match striker box. This box is a gorgeous plain polished silver with a bamboo style silver edge to the lid. It stands on four feet. The lid is hinged at the back and opens to reveal a lovely cedar wood compartment to the interior. The underside of the lid is a lovely pale gilt finish where a secret love message is engraved, which reads:
'I offer thee a heart
No Longer Mine
Since that its ev'ry part
Is wholly thine'
On the back of the box is a match striker (see images). Very clear hallmarks are visible to one side of the box on both lid and base for the London Assay Office with a date mark for 1908 and maker's mark for the renowned silversmiths: Goldsmiths & Silversmiths, along with the Lion Passant indicating the finest sterling.
The base of the box is leatherette covered.
A fabulous box by a fabulous maker, in lovely condition (there is a very tiny ding to one side just beneath the lid which we mention for accuracy only).
It is a great heavy gauge silver and of particularly nice proportions.
